Original Post:

I"m feeling really overwhelmed lately. I"m in 9th grade and have so much pressure to get into a good high school. My parents expect me to get top grades, so I"m taking extra classes on weekends. I"ve also been chosen for the school basketball team, which practices every day after school. I love playing, but it leaves me exhausted. I barely have time to hang out with my friends or even just relax and watch my favorite shows. I feel like I"m letting everyone down if I stop any of these activities. What should I do?

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate! It"s great that you"re so dedicated, but your health comes first. Have you tried talking to your parents about how you"re feeling? Maybe you could cut back on one of the extra classes if it"s not absolutely necessary. It"s important to have some "me time" to recharge.

I totally get it! I was in the same boat last year. What helped me was learning to say "no" sometimes. You don"t have to do everything. Also, try to use your time more efficiently. For example, I review vocabulary flashcards while I"m on the bus. You shouldn"t give up basketball if you love it—being active is a great way to beat stress!

It was a cold December morning. David, a mail carrier, was making his usual rounds in a quiet neighborhood. As he approached one house, he noticed something unusual—a plume of gray smoke was rising from under the garage door. Without hesitation, David dropped his bag of mail and rushed towards the garage.

He banged on the door and shouted, "Is anyone inside? Fire!" An elderly man, Mr. Gable, opened the door from the house leading into the garage, looking confused. He hadn"t noticed the smoke. David quickly explained the situation and helped Mr. Gable move his car out of the burning garage. He then ran to get a garden hose and tried to control the flames while shouting to Mr. Gable to call 911.

By the time the firefighters arrived, David had managed to stop the fire from spreading to the main house. The firefighters praised his quick action, saying it saved the house from being completely destroyed. Mr. Gable was extremely thankful. "David is a hero," he told a local reporter later. When we think of a "home", we usually picture a house or an apartment. But for thousands of years, humans have come up with creative ways to build shelters that fit their environment and needs. Here are a few amazing examples from around the world.

In the cold Arctic regions where Inuit people live, trees are very rare. For shelter, they historically built igloos using blocks of snow. The snow, packed tightly, traps air and creates excellent insulation. Inside, even when it"s freezing outside, the body heat of the people and a small oil lamp can make the temperature comfortable.

On the other side of the world, in the hot and dry regions of Tunisia, some people live in underground homes. These homes are built by digging a large pit in the ground and then carving rooms into the walls of the pit. This design keeps the homes naturally cool during the scorching desert day and warm during the chilly night.

In parts of Southeast Asia, like Indonesia, you can find houses built on stilts (支柱). These homes are raised high above the ground. This clever design protects the people living inside from floods during the rainy season and keeps wild animals out. The space underneath can also be used to keep animals or store things.

  1. What is a key feature of an igloo?A. It is made of wood from rare trees.B. It stays warm mainly from body heat.C. It is built underground to keep cool.

  2. Why do people in Tunisia build homes underground?A. To protect against strong winds.B. To stay safe from wild animals.C. To deal with the extreme temperatures.

  3. Which picture shows a house built on stilts?A.

The ocean is full of wonders, and one of its most intelligent creatures is the dolphin. But did you know that in the murky (浑浊的) waters of the Amazon River, there lives a dolphin that is bubble-gum pink?

The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the boto or pink river dolphin, is very different from its saltwater cousins. They are large, with males reaching up to 2.5 meters and weighing over 180 kilos. Their most striking feature, their pink color, becomes brighter in males as they get older. They also have a long snout (鼻子) and a flexible neck, which helps them hunt for fish in the flooded forests.

Unlike ocean dolphins, their neck bones are not fused together. This allows them to turn their heads at a 90-degree angle, which is very useful for swimming around tree trunks and branches. They are mostly solitary or live in small groups, not the large pods we often see in the ocean.

Sadly, these unique creatures are facing serious threats. The biggest danger comes from humans. Fishing nets accidentally catch and drown them. Pollution from gold mining, like mercury, poisons their food and water. Dam construction breaks their habitat into pieces, separating populations. They are now considered an endangered species, and scientists are working hard to find ways to protect them.

  1. What makes the Amazon river dolphin "very different"?A. It lives in large social groups.B. It has a flexible neck and pink skin.C. It is the smallest type of dolphin.

  2. How does its neck structure help the river dolphin?A. It helps them swim faster in the ocean.B. It makes it easier to find food in the forest.C. It allows them to communicate with each other.

  3. What is the main threat to the pink river dolphin?A. Natural enemies in the river.B. Getting lost during their travels.C. Human activities in their habitat.

  4. What will the writer most likely discuss next?A. The protection efforts for the dolphins.B. The different species of ocean dolphins.C. The diet and eating habits of the boto.

第三部分 写作(共两节,满分30分)

第一节(共5小题;满分10分)

阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题,并将答案写到答题卡的相应位置。

Animals are smart in their own ways, and scientists keep discovering amazing things about them. For example, we all know that elephants have good memories. But did you know they can also "talk" to each other from far away? They make very low sounds that humans can"t hear. These sounds, called infrasound, can travel for several kilometers through the ground. Other elephants feel the vibrations with their sensitive feet and understand the message.

Bees are another example of incredible animal communication. When a worker bee finds a good source of nectar (花蜜), it returns to the hive (蜂巢) and performs a special "waggle dance". The way it wiggles (摇摆) and the direction it moves tell the other bees exactly how far to fly and in which direction to find the flowers. This "dance language" is one of the most amazing forms of communication in the insect world.

Studying how animals communicate helps us understand them better. It shows us that they are not just simple creatures. They have complex social lives and their own ways of sharing information. This knowledge helps us to appreciate and protect them.

  1. According to the text, how do elephants communicate over long distances?

  2. What does a bee"s "waggle dance" tell other bees?

  3. Why do scientists study animal communication?

  4. The word "incredible" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to "_____________".

  5. If we could fully understand animal communication, what is one possible benefit? (Use your own words)
