If you have a child with a keen interest in the arts, you are bound to encounter these soul-searching questions:

Is studying art equivalent to being a poor student destined for unemployment?

Is studying art synonymous with high investment and low returns, or even high investment with no return at all?

Three years ago, when Vinnie, a 2026 graduate of Teensen Bilingual classes, wanted to pursue art after her high school entrance exam scores fell short of the requirements for a key academic high school, her parents' first reaction was not support, but concern.

"They didn't know much about art and thought that studying it would make it difficult to find a good job," Vinnie recalls. In her parents' generation's mindset, practical fields like accounting and  medicine, were the "proper paths" that would ensure a child's stable footing in life. "Their only wish was for me to have a stable livelihood in the future."

This is perhaps a dilemma every family with an aspiring art student experiences – a conflict between the child's passion and the parents' practical considerations, a struggle between the allure of ideals and the desire for security.

To alleviate her parents' worries, Vinnie tried to explain, "Jobs related to art are actually quite easy to find. Many companies need people for promotional roles, which is closely related to the Visual Communication major I want to pursue." However, what truly eased her parents' concerns was probably not this simple explanation, but her persistent dedication and hard work over the subsequent three years.

An Art Seeker Spending Weekends in a Relentless "Two-Point-One" Routine

Because her home was far from school, with a round trip taking five hours, Vinnie stayed on campus most weekends. Her weekends revolved almost exclusively around two activities: conquering the IELTS or refining her portfolio.

"I usually spent both weekend days studying for the IELTS. Sometimes, right after studying, I would go straight to the art room to work on my pieces," Vinnie recalls, speaking of that period as if these intense weekends were a normal part of every high school student's life.

However, the effort behind this understated description was witnessed and remembered by Coco, the head of the Heru Art Department. "Vinnie is an exceptionally hardworking and diligent child," Coco remarked. "She often said her English foundation was weak, so she spent more time than others studying for the IELTS. When she encountered difficulties in her drawings, like with perspective, she would revise them repeatedly until she was satisfied, never cutting corners."

This was indeed the case. While preparing for exams, she faced setbacks; while practicing perspective, she encountered moments of feeling completely stuck. There were times she broke down and cried on the floor, but Vinnie never truly stopped. She always managed to quickly compose herself and re-engage.

"Arriving at the classroom at 9:30 AM and not leaving until 6:30 PM.This was her unwavering routine. In this way, she carved out her own solitary yet determined path.

02.

"Teacher, Can I Pursue This Topic?"

For her first portfolio project, Vinnie wanted to explore a somewhat "sensitive" theme.

The inspiration came from her Wechat Moments: "Teachers in my Moments often share posts promoting the school. Sometimes, after scrolling, I'd see dozens of them in a row. The school's publicity always presents everything as very glamorous, but I could sometimes sense that the picture it painted didn't entirely match reality."

She wanted to use "over-promotion" as her subject, creating an animation about "packaging": an unremarkable banana from a fruit stall, after meticulous factory packaging and extensive advertising, becomes shiny and attractive, prompting people to buy it. However, once consumers get it home, they discover it isn't so fresh inside.

"I was really afraid this topic would be rejected," Vinnie admitted. So, she asked Ms. Coco to help seek Principal Tao Juanjuan's opinion.

To Vinnie's surprise, Principal Tao's response was very straightforward: "No problem, you can do it." Even more pleasantly surprising was that after the project was finally completed, Principal Tao even told her, "For this project, you could push it even further."

This perfectly embodies the educational philosophy of the Heru Art Department: genuine artistic creation never shies away from issues nor suppresses sincere expression.

Principal Tao later discussed the purpose and significance of school publicity with Vinnie but never asked her to abandon the topic as "inappropriate." She encouraged Vinnie to observe, think, and understand the complexities of the world for herself, and then use her creations to convey her genuine inner feelings.

That animation project, which had once made her so anxious, ultimately became the most unique and brilliant piece in her portfolio. Using the banana as a metaphor, she profoundly explored the distance between appearance and reality – a core and fundamental question within the field of Visual Communication.

03.

Starting from "Self"

Looking through Vinnie's portfolio, a distinct characteristic emerges: the inspiration for every project stems from her own life and experiences.

The project about missing children originated from a childhood experience of being accidentally "left behind" by her father. "When I was little, I loved following my dad around. When he got busy, he would sometimes forget I was there. Once, after finishing a car repair, he just left, and I was left behind there."

She transformed this childhood memory into an art project with a social message, researching statistics on missing children, mapping high-risk locations for such incidents, and constructing a complete narrative: how traffickers "bait" children, how parents can protect them, and the hope of finding those who are lost.

Her project about "emotional incontinence" (being prone to tears) was a deep dive into self-analysis and self-acceptance. "I can't help but cry whenever I get emotional. This has bothered me for many years. I know I shouldn't cry, but I just can't control it."

So, she materialized her tears into pearls, turning this long-troubling "quirk" into an art project exploring emotions and expression. Through her creation, she aimed to tell everyone that emotional incontinence isn't something one can simply control; it's a normal emotional response.

There are also projects about reward mechanisms, inspired by the warm memory of her mother buying her a bike even though she scored 98 on a test; and reflections on the cycle of life, incorporating her understanding of classics like the Tao Te Ching and I Ching...

"Most of my projects start from my own experiences and feelings," Vinnie says. This perfectly aligns with the core principle the University of the Arts London emphasizes for portfolios: "Show Your Authentic Self." A portfolio is never merely a display of finished artworks; it is a complete presentation of the creator's thought process and inner world.

Over two and a half years, through her persistent daily efforts and wholehearted dedication, Vinnie enabled the admissions committee at one of the world's top art colleges, over twelve time zones away, to clearly see the growth trajectory of this girl from Jiangxi. They saw her anxiety and tears while preparing for exams, her perseverance and commitment during creation, her rational critique of school publicity, her deep concern for the issue of missing children, and her acceptance and reconciliation with her own "emotional incontinence."

In the Heru Art Department, each student's unique style is allowed to flourish freely. "My classmate Pipi focuses on traditional Chinese culture, while I'm more inclined to draw inspiration from life itself. Our styles are completely different, and the work we produce is distinct." Here, there are no constraints of a single "right answer," no pressure from rankings and competition. Instead, there is patient, positive feedback from teachers and respect for the expression of each individual.

At Teensen, we aim to provide every student eager to discover their passion with the soil, respect, and professional support they need.

Studying Art: Not a Fallback, but a Calling

We must be honest: art has never been an easy path, nor is it a second-choice fallback. On the contrary, it often entails more solitude and a longer, more arduous journey.

The path of art requires not just interest, but an almost stubborn passion, a dedication that makes one forget food and sleep, and the courage to be different and to express boldly.

It has never been a "safety net" for poor grades, nor a "shortcut" for university admission. It is a prolonged struggle with oneself – constantly delving deeper into one's inner world, continuously refining one's aesthetic sense, and relentlessly striving for purer, sharper expression.

Vinnie

Vinnie's three years are the perfect testament to this statement.

********

Returning to the initial questions, the answers are already clear within Vinnie's story.

Does studying art equal poor grades? Vinnie's high school entrance exam scores were indeed not ideal, yet today she holds an offer from the world's number one arts university. Studying art was never a fallback; it was her passion and perseverance for creation.

Does studying art equal unemployment? Graduates from the University of the Arts London are found in top design firms globally, and the career prospects for Visual Communication are far broader than imagined. More importantly, she has acquired a way of thinking: how to observe the world, how to express oneself, and how to solve problems.

Does studying art equal high investment with low returns? If we factor in the returns of confidence, passion, independent thinking, and expressive ability – this girl has already gained immensely from these three years.

Those weekends spent alone in the art studio, the moments of frustration when inspiration wouldn't come, the days of juggling IELTS preparation with portfolio development – all of it ultimately became an integral part of her portfolio.

Now, Vinnie is about to embark on her journey to London, a city of mists and lights, to attend that world-leading arts university and continue her path as a creator who starts from "self."
