The Computer in the Wall

In 1999, in a poor area of New Delhi, a scientist named Sugata Mitra did an unusual experiment. He cut a hole in the wall of his office building and placed a computer screen inside it, facing the street. Children from the neighbourhood had never used a computer before. Nobody was sent to teach them. Mitra simply wanted to see what would happen.

What happened surprised everyone. Within hours, children were pressing buttons and opening programs. Within days, they were browsing the internet — in English, a language most of them could hardly speak. They learned by watching each other and by trying again and again. When one child discovered something new, a crowd quickly gathered, and the knowledge spread through the group.

Mitra repeated the experiment in villages far from cities and got similar results. He called what he saw "minimally invasive education": if you give children the right tools and leave them alone, their natural curiosity will do most of the teaching. Some teachers did not agree. They said that children also need guidance, order and a plan — not just a machine in a wall.

Still, the "hole-in-the-wall" computer became famous around the world. It even inspired a group of schools in England that let children work together online to answer big questions, with an adult only as a helper. Years later, Mitra said the most important lesson of the experiment was not about computers at all. It was about children — and how much they can do when adults step back and trust them.

11. Why did Mitra put a computer in the wall?

A. To find out if children could learn to use it without lessons.

B. To give the neighbourhood free internet at home.

C. To test how strong the computer was.

D. To teach himself about poor areas.

12. How did the children mainly learn to use the computer?

A. A teacher gave them lessons every day.

B. They read books about computers first.

C. They watched and taught each other.

D. They took an online course together.

13. What does "minimally invasive education" mean in Paragraph 3?

A. Teachers should give children harder exams.

B. With the right tools, children can learn mostly by themselves.

C. Children must never use computers.

D. Schools should buy more machines.

14. Why did some teachers disagree with Mitra?

A. Children also need guidance and a plan, not just a machine.

B. The computer was too expensive for schools.

C. The experiment was done in the wrong country.

D. Children in villages did not want to learn.

15. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Poor Children Need New Schools

B. The Computer in the Wall and What It Taught Us

C. How to Use the Internet in English

D. Scientists and Their Long Experiments

1. B "stamps from more than twenty ______" → 集邮册里的邮票来自二十多个"国家" → countries。

2. A "the teacher warmly ______ me to join them" → 老师热情地"邀请"我加入 → invited。

3. A "At first, I simply ______ the pretty colours."

4. B "Each stamp ... tells a ______" → 每枚邮票都讲述一个"故事" → story,与后文冒号里的解释和末段 "a whole afternoon of stories" 呼应。

5. A "learn the stories ______ the stamps" → 邮票"背后"的故事 → behind(the story behind ...

6. A "she suddenly ______ and pointed at a small green stamp" → 突然"停住"并指向那枚邮票 → stopped。

7. A "The colour of the star is ______ — only a few stamps like this were ever made."

8. C "a printing mistake can sometimes make a stamp ______ to collectors" → 错版反而"值钱" → valuable。

9. B "my grandmother's album was the ______ of the show" → 成为展览的"明星" → the star of the show 固定搭配。gift「礼物」、key「钥匙」、cover「封面」都不与 of the show 搭配成此义。

10. A "Those stamps ______ me three years of saving." → 这些邮票花掉了奶奶三年攒的钱 → cost(sth costs sb some time/money)。gave「给」与"三年积蓄"逻辑相反;taught「教」、lent「借」均不与 "three years of saving" 搭配。

11. A 第一段:"Nobody was sent to teach them. Mitra simply wanted to see what would happen."

12. C 第二段:"They learned by watching each other and by trying again and again. When one child discovered something new, a crowd quickly gathered" → 互相观察、互相教,选 C。A「老师每天上课」与 "Nobody was sent to teach them" 相反;B「先读电脑书」无据;D「一起上网课」无据。

13. B 第三段:"if you give children the right tools and leave them alone, their natural curiosity will do most of the teaching."

They said that children also need guidance, order and a plan — not just a machine in a wall."

15. B 全文围绕"墙洞电脑"实验展开:怎么做的、结果如何、引发的教育思考,末段点题 "the most important lesson of the experiment was ... about children" → B 概括最全面。
