Dear Mr. White,

I’m Li Hua, one of your students. I’m writing to ask for some help. I’ll graduate from high school soon. Recently, I argued with my parents about the choice of the major at college.

As doctors, my parents wish me to major in Medicine. However, I’ve been interested in vehicles since primary school. I think new energy vehicles will have a promising future. Neil was a 10-year-old boy living in Brooklyn with his family. He was born with a rare facial deformity (面部畸形). Due to several surgeries, Neil had been home-schooled by his mother, but as he approached fifth grade, his parents decided to enroll him in Beecher Prep, a private school. In order to protect his face skin, Neil had to apply ointment (药膏) to his face, which made him look like he was wearing a special face mask. 

When he first started school, he was rejected by almost all the students because of his strange look, which was a difficult time for him. Fortunately, a girl named Lina offered to sit with him on his first day of school and helped him get through that difficult time. They often played together and talked about their favorite subject—physics. They became good friends. 

Gradually, Neil’s excellent learning ability and kind behavior made him popular with the students. Since Neil was well versed in (精通) science, his classmates would turn to him whenever they had a problem with their studies. Neil was always more than willing to help them. 

On Halloween, Neil’s school hosted a variety of holiday activities, with each classroom decorated with flowers and toys. All the students were dressing up. Neil was also in attendance, wearing a grimace mask and costume. They all pretended to be their favorite characters and had a great time. Unrecognized, he was walking through the classroom door when he overheard his classmate Jack saying to his roommates, “I’ve never seen an uglier face than Neil’s.” Neil heard this, sad and disappointed, and secretly left. Lina happened to stand behind Neil, and encountered the incident, but it was too late to stop it. As Neil’s best friend at school, Lina thought Neil was a good boy who should be treated kindly.

·What would Lina say to Jack?根据原文可知，Neil学习优秀，也十分乐意帮助同学们解决学习上的问题。因此，这里我们可以合理构思，Lina应该会和Jack说Neil的优点——他是一个乐于助人的好孩子，劝告Jack不应该以貌取人。同时，我们还需续写在Lina的劝说下，Jack认识到了自己的错误，以此与第二段衔接。

2. 续文第二段的构思如下。

·Would Neil accept Jack’s apology?结合段首句，接下来要写Jack去给Neil道歉，希望能得到他的原谅。那么Neil会接受Jack的道歉吗？结合原文中对Neil的描述，他很友善，又乐于助人，所以他接受了Jack的道歉。

·What would be the reaction of the other students?根据原文中第三、四段的情节可知，大多数同学刚开始并不喜欢Neil，后来因Neil学习优秀又乐于助人，他很受同学们的欢迎。这里我们可以构思班级其他同学出场，他们提出想和Neil做朋友，Neil欣然接受的情节。这一情节可以体现同学们之间的友爱，升华主题。

After a second thought, Lina walked up to Jack. Lina angrily told Jack that his behavior was rude and caused Neil serious harm. Jack said that Neil’s face was really ugly and he didn’t lie. Lina said, “Although Neil looks different from us, he is a very good boy. In addition, he is not only good at science, but also eager to help us solve problems. We shouldn’t judge people by their appearance.” After hearing Lina’s words, Jack realized what he had done was wrong.

Jack decided to say sorry to Neil. He went to Neil and sincerely apologized to him for his wrong behavior. Neil accepted Jack’s apology. At that time, the rest of the class came. They expressed their eagerness to be friends with Neil, and hoped that he would agree to their request. A warm current rising in his heart, Neil nodded happily with his eyes glistening with tears. Then their laughter filled the air.
